Valencia beats Sporting Gijon 1-2 on away
Mario Suarez scored twice as Valencia defeated Sporting Gijon 1-2 on away, Saturday evening.
Sunday evening, Sporting Gijon faced off against Valencia at Estadio El Molinon in Gijon in a La Liga showdown. Ahead of the match, both clubs desperately needed points in the bottom of the La Liga table. With a victory, Sporting Gijon would move above Malaga in 13th place, while Valencia with a victory would move up into 14th place, just above Deportivo La Coruna. Both teams would end below the relegation line with a defeat, so they had everything to win.
Just seven minutes into the first half, Mario Suarez sent the ball into goal and Valencia in the lead with 0-1. The remainder of the half belonged very much Sporting Gijon and toward the end it finally paid off. With less than five minutes left before the break, Carlos Castro kicked the ball into goal and thus settled the score to 1-1, which was also the score at halftime.
The second half lacked chances although both teams did their best to play their way to attempts. 20 minutes into the half, Mario Suarez sent the ball into goal and Valencia in the lead with 1-2. It was the striker’s third goal in the past two matches.
Sporting Gijon did not manage to settle the score before time and thus the match ended with a 1-2 victory to Valencia.
With the victory today, Valencia moves up into the 14th place of the La Liga table with nine points in eight matches, just below Malaga in 13th place also with nine points in eight matches and just above Deportivo La Coruna in 15th place with eight points in eight matches. Valencia is currently nine points below Atletico Madrid in first place, but only three points away from Europa League places.
Sporting Gijon is currently just below the relegation line with seven points in eight matches, just below Espanyol and just above Osasuna with just three points in seven matches.
